A rarely updated blog about programming and lack of sleep

    More programming means more fun!

This is great! Now i'm using more than half of my day at work looking at code! Of course a lot of this takes time because i'm not a particularly fast coder yet. A lot of time is taken up with searching for answers any experienced programmer could have answered in less than 5. But i'm learning.
The few last weeks i've touched asp.net, OAuth2, our company's public API, HttpWebRequest, a lot of javascript and HTML5 video playback and flash video playback, and Facebook apps.

At home i'm working on a Drupal website for muffensmedia.com, creating a custom theme and a few other features.

All and all i'm having fun. :)

    First update in a while

Never been happy about the design of my blog. Tried unsuccessfully a few redesigns, and have lately experimentet with html5 and responsive design. The designs work nicely, but look like shite. Really, i am no designer. So all and all, i'll think i keep this theme for a while longer. Done a few improvements on the blog, though. Image upload, added my logo, and a menu with only one category. Maybe i'll add one "About me" soon, but i don't expect anyone to hold their breaths.

    Wake up

Wake upWoke up early today. Of all the minutes of this night, i woke up a humble minute before a friends misplaced cellphone alarm went off. And i'm awake! I wish i could wake up like that on a work-day, instead of having to slowly wake up, a process which takes up to 30 minutes!

Possible solution: The Sleeptracker Elite! I'll report my results.

    Sleeptracker Elite

Edit 20.10.2011: First night testing it. Didn't go well, because i barely slept. No use having an alarm wake me if i'm already awake. And the strap is a bit sweaty when wearing it.

Edit 24.10.2011: A success so far! It's easier to wake up in the morning, as the alarm always goes of when i'm almost awake (that happens oftener than i thought). If these results keep up the whole week, it will be the best 1000,- i've ever spent.

    Voting with standards

All movies i watch, i vote on at IMDB, because i just love to track what i do. But voting with numbers are very subjective, and i strive to vote as accurately as possible. In that effort, i've found a system i use to decide what number i will vote on a one to ten scale.

This list was not made by me, but by someone at nwvault forums for voting for Neverwinter Nights modules. I have adapted them for movie voting.

2011 will be The Great Year of Sequels

Right now it feels like it is game drought and as a result I've started playing MMO. First I tested Lord of the Rings Online and got two friends to join me on this. Then another friend persuaded me to try Champions Online. Both games are Free-To-Play, and both games cost me about 80 NOK each month, and they cost nothing to buy. They was both good enough that I found it worth paying at least for a month.

    Back from summer-break

It has been an unstable July month, and I am not just talking about the weather. One of my roommates and close friends has moved across the country to study. Another less close friend are about to become roommate, giving me a chance to mend past mistakes. And the third roommate has finally gotten himself a job, and is now able to pay his share of the rent.

The summer-break has given me some time to reflect, and I realize that I need to make a few changes in my life. I love changes, and I try from time to time to change. The problem is that I too soon revert to the normal routine because of my lack of discipline. Maybe it will be easier to change in the middle of changes.

These are the changes I need to do:

    • I must be at work for at least 8 hours each day, no excuse and less doing work from my home-computer. I must also be at work before 9 every day, and try to reduce oversleeping.
    • I need to join some exercise activity. Buy myself a subscription for a training studio. The reason I haven't yet is because I hate the subscription binding time.
    • And I must do at least 1 hour personal work (any personal projects) each day. If I don't hone my skills they will surely fade and/or expire.
    • Lastly, I gotta try eating more diverse food.

And I should probably reduce my caffeine intake, but I don't really want to do that.

Anyway, if I am able to focus on doing these tasks for a few months, I promise myself(1) a brand, grand new shiny and awesome stationary gaming computer!

    (1) That is, if I am able to afford it.

Thought-experiment about using guns as home defense

Disclaimer: Yes, this is an overly simplification of how a real situation would occur. But it is still a bit more advanced than the pro-guns "Gun = Protection". Not that any of this really matters at all, I live in Norway, not the States. Let them kill each other over there if they really want to…
